international student Admission Requirements

F1 Student visa

In order to ob­tain the I-20 doc­u­ment, nec­es­sary for the F1 stu­dent visa ap­pli­ca­tion, each can­di­date must meet the fol­low­ing re­quire­ments:

1. Completed signed and dated application form and enrollment agreement.
2. Visa fee of $250 dollars (non-refundable) made payable to MIU City University Miami via wire transfer.
3. Payment of the first installment of the tuition fee before the I-20 is processed (which will be refunded in full if the F1 visa is denied for reasons depending on the university. However, the installment is not refunded if the visa is denied for reasons depending on the applicant).
4. Financial statement or certified bank letter in English demonstrating full tuition funds available, along with capability to cover living expenses for minimum 12 months, as well as fees, books, supplies, and any other necessary expenses during your studies. (Amounts must be in or converted to USD currency).
5. Affidavit of support form in case of sponsor.
6. Academic diplomas and certifications in English.
7. If a student’s native language is not English, proficiency in English must be established by one of the following options:
   1. Satisfactory Standardized Test Score, such as PTE (54), TOEFL (70–IBT) or IELTS (6.0),
   2. MIU City University Miami English Test.
   3. Proof of graduating from a college or high school where English is the primary language of instruction.
   4. Completing an ESL program at an institution that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
   5. Completing an ESL program at MIU City University Miami.
8. Copy of a valid passport (upon admissions).
9. Once the ap­pli­cant re­ceives the I-20 doc­u­ment from the uni­ver­sity, they needs to sched­ule an ap­point­ment at the U.S. Em­bassy in their coun­try of ori­gin and pre­sent a copy of the SEVIS/I-901 re­ceipt. (www.​fmjfee.​com)

In­ter­na­tional stu­dents are ad­vised to begin the ad­mis­sion process at least 6 months be­fore classes start in order to have enough time to com­plete the visa pro­ce­dure and ob­tain all the doc­u­ments re­quired to apply for ad­mis­sion.

Academic requirements: Bachelor’s degree

For ad­mis­sion to the bach­e­lor’s de­gree pro­gram, ap­pli­cants must have a high school diploma. Grad­u­ates of rec­og­nized aca­d­e­mic in­sti­tu­tions out­side the United States should hold a de­gree equiv­a­lent to a U.S. high school diploma. The Ad­mis­sions Of­fice will in­di­cate how to show equiv­a­lency.

Ap­pli­cants will be con­sid­ered for ad­mis­sion if they sat­isfy the fol­low­ing:

• Submit a high school diploma/transcripts
• Submit a completed admissions application
• Submit a $150 non-refundable application fee
• Submit an updated resume/CV
• Copy of valid government issued ID or passport
• For bachelor’s programs offered in English, students whose native language is not English must provide evidence of English proficiency.

To verify English proficiency, MIU has the following minimum requirements:

A minimum total score of 57 on the paper-delivered Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), or 61 on the Internet-based Test (iBT); 6.0 on the International English Language Test (IELTS); 44 on the Pearson Test of English Academic Score Report; 95 on the Duolingo English Test; 53 on the 4-skill Michigan English Test (MET), or 650/LP on the Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE), or 650/LP on the Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE); or a B-2 English proficiency level, assessed through exams belonging to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

To satisfy this requirement, undergraduate applicants may also present a high school diploma completed at an accredited/recognized high school where the medium of instruction is English.

For programs offered in Spanish:

For applicants whose first language is not Spanish, evidence of Spanish language proficiency must be provided. The university accepts official tests which conform to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) such as the DELE or SIELE exams and certify a B2 proficiency level or higher. Proficiency exams which certify levels equivalent to a CEFR level of B2 may also be considered

Academic requirements: Master’s degree

In order to be ad­mit­ted to one of our mas­ter’s pro­grams, ap­pli­cants must pos­sess a valid bach­e­lor’s or master’s de­gree. Grad­u­ates of rec­og­nized aca­d­e­mic in­sti­tu­tions out­side the United States should hold a de­gree equiv­a­lent to a U.S. bach­e­lor’s or master’s de­gree. The Ad­mis­sions Of­fice will in­di­cate how to show equiv­a­lency.

For programs offered in Spanish:

For ad­mis­sion to the Continuing Education Courses, ap­pli­cants must present the following:

• Submit a completed admission application
• Copy of valid government-issued ID or passport
• Proof of completed or current bachelor’s degree studies at the time of application, or equivalent work experience

Campus FAQ

Are courses offered in both English and Spanish?

Yes! Degree programs are offered in English and Spanish, in both online and hybrid formats.

Are the hybrid courses different from the online courses?

The hybrid courses are exactly the same as the online courses, with the exception of the Intensive English Course which is exclusively available on campus as part of the hybrid program.

As an international student, what will I need to do to study at the Miami campus?

In order to study at the Miami campus, international students will require an F1 student visa. The MIU City University Miami administration office will help with the process of obtaining the visa, allowing international students to live and study in Miami for the duration of the course. In order to complete the admissions process, the candidate must meet and submit the following requirements:

1. Send the necessary documentation to the administrative office (see above);
2. The administrative office will contact you about obtaining the “I-20 Form” necessary for the F1 visa application
3. An interview with the Embassy
4. The administrative office of the Embassy will contact you about the visa.

International students should begin the admission process at least 6 months before classes start in order to leave enough time to complete their visa application and obtain all the documents required to apply for admission.

As an international student, am I permitted to work in the USA?

American universities are organically linked to the job market. From the beginning of your degree, you are encouraged to build your professional career and be involved in internships and practical activities. In addition, after graduation, students with an F1 student visa have the opportunity to obtain an OPT visa that allows them to work in the USA for 1 year, putting the skills acquired during the program into practice.
