Sports are a great way to make new friends, connect with your community, relieve symptoms of culture shock, and improve your physical and mental health.  

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just looking to have some fun and break a sweat, this guide will show you where to get started.

Sports to do in Miami

Miami’s vibrant outdoor culture and excellent facilities mean there’s something for everyone. Here’s a taste of what you can get involved in:

Beachside activities

  • Beach volleyball: With miles of stunning coastline, beach volleyball is a quintessential Miami experience. 
  • Water sports: Being surrounded by water means ample opportunities for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, wakeboarding, kite boarding, and sailing. There are rental shops and clubs along the beaches for equipment and lessons. 
  • Running and cycling: Miami’s scenic waterfront paths are ideal for running and cycling. Bayfront Park, Maurice A. Ferré Park, and Miami Beach boardwalk are all good options close to MIU’s campus.
  • Rollerblading: While you can rollerblade at any park, Miami Beach Boardwalk and South Point Park are two iconic spots.

  • Basketball: You’ll find public basketball courts in many parks across the city, perfect for a casual game with friends. Dorsey Park and Margaret Pace Park are two options close to MIU.
