MIU President Daniel Burgos Awarded the DEAC Global Impact Award in Washington

Daniel Burgos, President of MIU City University Miami, has been awarded the DEAC Global Impact Award at a gala held in Washington, D.C., as part of the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) Annual Conference. Burgos personally attended the ceremony and received the award during the official celebration marking DEAC’s centennial.
“I am truly honoured by this award, which supports the transformative power of distance and online education when driven by quality, honesty, and social impact,” said Daniel Burgos after accepting the award. “This distinction is a personal award but a collective recognition to the whole team at MIU City University Miami. All of us strongly believe in learning and teaching processes as a way to an effective contribution to the educational community and common good in society”
The DEAC Global Impact Award recognizes individuals whose vision, leadership, and innovation have generated a profound and measurable global impact through practices that elevate the quality and creativity of distance education and improve student success within DEAC-accredited institutions. Created as part of DEAC’s centennial celebration, Burgos becomes the first-ever recipient of this new award category.
Recognition of Educational Leadership
The DEAC Awards Committee highlighted Burgos’s outstanding academic and institutional leadership, particularly for his role as the architect and leader of the international initiative ‘Virtualization of Universities’. This global program has implemented over 200 training courses and has enabled the competence upskilling of over 6.000 university professors across more than 40 countries to ensure academic continuity during times of crisis, providing advanced training in digital transformation, pedagogical innovation, and an balanced used of technology
Beyond his role as President of MIU City University Miami, Daniel Burgos is a globally recognized academic leader in educational innovation, with more than three decades of experience in higher education, digital transformation, and educational technology. His professional career is marked by fourteen doctoral degrees, extensive research publication with over 270 scientific papers and 60 books, and international leadership in educational technology and innovation. He is also the editor of the Declaration on the Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education, presented at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, in 2024.

Gala Celebrating a Centennial
The awards ceremony also marked the centennial of DEAC, a prestigious accrediting agency recognized by both the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education DEAC’s awards program comprises six categories, including the Distinguished Service Award, Rising Star Award, Innovation Award, and three new categories introduced this year.
