What Is EdTech and How Is It Transforming Education?

Picture this: You’re a student working on a group project. Instead of trying to find a time and place where everyone can meet, you and your classmates log into the same online workspace to edit your presentation and then meet over video chat.

Your teacher reviews your group’s progress, sees how each student is contributing, and provides feedback, all on the same platform.

Experiences like this are becoming more common as schools adopt EdTech, and educators who want to lead the integration of educational technology can explore it through MIU’s Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, Management, and New Technologies, which examines how technology can support learning, teaching, and educational leadership.

So, what is EdTech? Let’s take a closer look at what educational technology is and how it’s changing education.

What is EdTech?

Have you ever taken a class online? Submitted homework through an online learning platform? Attended a live lecture over video conferencing? If you’ve done any of those things, then you’ve already encountered EdTech. In a nutshell, it’s the use of technology to support teaching and learning.

What are the main types and examples of EdTech?

LMS and online learning platforms

If you’ve ever taken an online learning course, there was likely some sort of platform where you found all your assignments, readings, grades, discussion boards, announcements, etc: a Learning Management System (LMS), which are at the heart of e-learning. They give students access to educational resources no matter where they are: at home, at the local library or a coffee shop. Even from another country.

They also give teachers a way to organize their courses, share materials, collect assignments, and monitor the progress of their students digitally.

Gamification and EdTech games

Competition and play are great motivators for learners, which is why EdTech games use features like challenges, point systems, badges, and other features of gamification. All of those things make learning more interactive and fun for students.

Artificial intelligence in education

Decades ago, teachers had to calculate students’ scores by hand with a pencil and paper. Then, calculators and computer spreadsheets came along, making things much simpler and reducing errors.

If we look at those tools as part of the evolution of education, AI is the next step. It helps educators identify learning patterns and personalize the way they teach and evaluate students. Teachers can customize tests and assignments while adapting existing classroom materials to student needs and interests, current events, or trending topics.

For example, during the recent World Cup, teachers could generate World Cup-themed activities for math, history, language, and more with the help of AI.

Allowing students to use AI in education is a controversial topic, but when it’s used responsibly, AI can help students brainstorm, understand difficult concepts, and receive instant, personalized feedback. All they need is a device connected to the internet.

What are the benefits of EdTech for students and teachers?

Today, students can learn from different locations and on schedules that fit around their work, family, and other commitments. They have quicker access to course materials and can work more easily with their classmates and instructors as well.

Lessons and assessments can be adapted to meet the needs of individual students, groups, and learning contexts, while multimedia activities and collaboration tools make learning more engaging.

EdTech simplifies a lot of things for teachers, like lesson planning, grading, communication, and classroom management, which gives them more time to focus on teaching and supporting their students. It can also help reduce the amount of grading and administrative work teachers need to take home at the end of the day.

How is EdTech transforming education?

Imagine two classrooms. In one, every assignment is printed on paper, and students have to complete it by hand. They turn them in to their teacher and then have to wait days for the teacher to grade them by hand. By the time they get any feedback, they’ve probably moved on to a different concept in class. And if they have a group project, that means meeting up at someone’s house after school.

In the other classroom, students log in to a digital platform to see their assignments, and they complete them online. They can even connect with classmates to do group projects using the same digital application, each on their own devices. Teachers can provide quick feedback and even monitor progress.

The second classroom isn’t just more convenient. It completely changes the way students learn, collaborate, and receive feedback from their teachers and peers. Plus, it gives teachers more time to focus on instruction instead of administrative tasks.

That’s how EdTech is transforming education. It’s more flexible, efficient, and accessible.

Technology in education isn’t about replacing teachers. UNESCO notes that “digital technology should not substitute but instead complement face-to-face interaction with teachers.” Technology is giving teachers and learners new ways to interact with each other and with course content.

What are the challenges and limitations of EdTech?

Of course, technology isn’t improving education equally everywhere. Imagine a school that wants to implement an online learning platform, but over half of its students don’t have reliable internet access or enough devices. The same school has limited funding, so it can’t purchase new equipment or software licenses, and it also can’t afford the training teachers need.

Academic integrity is another issue. It’s easy for students to ask AI to do their assignments for them, which isn’t only dishonest. It also keeps them from developing important skills like writing, research, and critical thinking.

Data privacy is another issue, as are cybersecurity, screen time, and online safety.

So, while EdTech is beneficial for many, there are also challenges and limitations that need to be addressed.

Top Educational Technology tools for modern classrooms

If you walk into a modern classroom, it will probably look very different from classrooms half a century ago. It might not even be a physical room. Instead of writing assignments on the chalkboard, teachers post them on Google Classroom. Instead of taking quizzes on paper, students can answer using Kahoot! Some classes can even explore museums, faraway destinations, and the past through virtual reality.

Here are some of the most common types of educational technology tools used today:

  • Learning Management Systems: Google Classroom, Moodle, Blackboard Learn, and Canvas.
  • Video conferencing platforms: Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams
  • Interactive whiteboards: SMART Board and Promethean
  • AI assistants: Microsoft Copilot, Khanmigo, and ChatGPT used for learning
  • Digital assessment platforms: Kahoot!, Quizizz, and Google Forms
  • Collaboration software: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Padlet
  • Virtual and augmented reality applications: ClassVR, Google Expeditions, and Merge EDU

What are the latest EdTech trends and market outlook?

Personalized learning with the help of AI continues to increase, helping teachers to spend less time on repetitive administrative tasks. Schools are also using learning analytics to identify students who could benefit from additional support before they fall behind.

At the same time, short, mobile-friendly learning experiences that adapt to busy schedules are expanding, and the demand for flexible online learning and opportunities for professional development is strong.

These are some of the big EdTech trends in 2026 shaping the future of education.

What are the leading EdTech companies and startups?

Google for Education, Khan Academy, Moodle, and Instructure (the company behind Canvas)… These are some of the biggest educational technology companies today. They have all developed tools that make it possible for schools and universities to offer online and hybrid learning.

There are plenty of EdTech startups that are constantly introducing new ideas, especially when it comes to artificial intelligence and personalized learning. Many are developing tools that save teachers time and give students more individualized support.

How to lead the EdTech transformation with a master’s degree

Successfully integrating EdTech in schools and other learning environments requires more than knowing how to use digital tools. Professionals need to understand how technology supports teaching and learning.

A Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, Management, and New Technologies, prepares educators and other education professionals to build those skills while learning how to lead the effective use of digital educational technology.

Graduates can then go on to apply that knowledge in a variety of leadership roles, such as director of education, digital learning specialist, educational technology consultant, and academic innovation manager to help organizations make thoughtful use of technology to support educators and learners.
